Understanding MOT appointments
In Great Britain, your MOT has to be carried out at an approved MOT test centre. GOV.UK advises drivers to contact an MOT centre directly to make a booking. Northern Ireland has a different system, where MOTs are booked through the Driver & Vehicle Agency, so advice about a central online cancellation system generally relates to Northern Ireland rather than Hampshire.
Once you’ve made a booking, keep the confirmation handy. If your plans change, deal with it as soon as you can. It gives the garage more chance to offer the appointment to somebody else and gives you a better choice of replacement dates.
How to cancel an MOT appointment
Contact the garage you booked with
If you’ve booked an MOT with an independent garage in England, Scotland or Wales, cancellation and rebooking are normally handled by that garage rather than DVSA.
The exact rules vary. Some garages set their own notice periods and may have charges for late cancellations or missed appointments, so check the terms attached to your booking rather than assuming there is one national rule.

What about cancelling online?
This depends on the booking system used by your garage. If your confirmation gives you an option to manage the appointment online, follow the instructions there.
Don’t confuse an MOT cancellation with a driving test cancellation. Driving tests are managed centrally by DVSA and have their own cancellation rules. MOT appointments in Great Britain work differently. For an ordinary MOT, GOV.UK tells you to contact an approved MOT centre to book the test.
What is the best time to check for MOT cancellations?
Early morning is a sensible time to look, with Monday morning particularly worth checking after the weekend. But there is no official DVSA release time for MOT cancellations at garages in Great Britain.
Appointments can become available whenever another customer changes their plans, so checking more than once is better than relying on a particular hour.
This is an important distinction. Online advice about MOT cancellations often refers to Northern Ireland, where vehicle testing uses a central DVA booking system. That is not how MOT bookings work here in Hampshire.
For a local garage, a cancelled appointment can potentially appear whenever its diary is updated. Early morning is useful because you’re seeing the diary before much of the working day has passed. Monday morning is also a sensible check because changes made or requested over the weekend may be dealt with then.
If your MOT expiry date is getting close, don’t wait around refreshing a page in the hope that the perfect cancellation appears. Check the diary, and give the garage a call as well. A human being who knows you’re flexible on time can sometimes be more useful than repeatedly introducing your thumb to the refresh button.
Rebooking or changing your MOT date
If you can no longer make your original appointment, rebook as soon as you know. The nearer you get to your MOT expiry date, the less room you have if your preferred day is already full.
There’s also a useful MOT timing rule worth knowing. You can have your MOT up to one month, minus one day, before the current certificate expires and keep the same renewal date for the following year. For example, if your MOT expires on 15 May, you can have the test from 16 April and retain that 15 May renewal date.

If the garage cancels your appointment

What if your MOT expires before the new appointment?
Don’t assume that having another MOT booked means you can carry on driving normally after the old certificate expires.
GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. There are limited exceptions, including driving to a pre-arranged MOT test or to or from somewhere for repairs.
The easier answer is to avoid getting that close where possible. Check your expiry date early and use the one month minus one day window to give yourself some room.
Practical tips if you need to cancel or rebook
A few simple things make the process easier:
- Tell the garage as soon as you know. Don’t wait until the morning of the MOT if you already know you cannot make it.
- Check early in the day for cancellations. Monday morning is particularly worth a look, but slots can become free at any time.
- Be flexible if your MOT is nearly due. A different time of day may get the car tested sooner.
- Know your expiry date. You can check your MOT history and expiry date through GOV.UK.
